Girls Drop-out of School because of Menstruation-Engineer Harold Esseku

Sanitary Engineer, Harold Esseku has said that over 10,000 basic schools in the county do not have toilet facilities. The number is half the estimated 20,000 public schools in Ghana, apart from the thousands of privately owned schools that may not have toilet facilities. Engineer Harold Esseku says the absence of such facilities force girls to abandon school during menstruation.

This he made known at the sixth edition of the Achimota Speaks Forum. A survey he conducted in 2014 revealed that over 10,000 basic schools do not have toilet facilities. It was also revealed that when girls were menstruating they missed 4 or 5 days of school because they had no place to change. This subsequently led to their dropping out of school altogether.

According to him, nothing much has changed after he conducted the survey in 2014 as the number of schools without toilet facilities is almost the same even in 2017. “One school where the girls have a toilet, they outnumber the boys in the Junior High School by almost 2:1 and in a school where there is no toilet there are almost no girls in Junior High School” he said.

Engineer Harold Esseku is a sanitary engineer and a member of the National Council of the Ghana Institution of Engineers.
