Ghana Card:Muslims, Northerners denied registration in Kasoa

Several persons who hail from the Northern part of the country have been refused registration in the ongoing exercise in the central region.

The development has caused dissatisfaction and at some instances chaos at the registration centers in Kasoa which is predominantly known for the large number of Muslim and northern settlers.

Speaking to Pinknews, the Assembly member for Odupongkpehe Zongo electoral area stated that even though he has tried several times to ensure that such discrimination based on people’s descent is avoided, officials of the National Identification Authority have remained strongly adamant.

According to him, several northerners and Muslims who reside in the Odupongkpehe Zongo have been denied the Ghana card registration because they could not express themselves in the Twi language.

He mentioned also that Muslim women who put on veils are also denied the registration.

Last week, a similar incident happened at the Adam Nana registration center which upon the resistance of some members from the Kpormetey Zongo community caused the NIA officials to close at 1pm even though they were supposed to close at 5 in the evening.

Meanwhile, some persons have also raised concern about the fact that, some registration officials have been taking bribes ranging from GHC 30 to GHC 100 from registrants before they are attended. According to them, registrants who refuse to grease the palms of the officials are deliberately delayed for several days without registration even though some of the complainants mentioned that they have passed about three nights at the centers.
