Formula One-Sirotkin signs for Renault as test driver

Russian Formula One driver Sergey Sirotkin has agreed to join Renault as a test driver and will make his debut in his home country on Friday.

Renault’s announcement comes just days before the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi and Sirotkin will take part in practice for the French team.

Despite being just 20 years of age, Sirotkin is embarking on his second test driver role within F1 after a spell with Sauber in 2014.

Renault’s racing manager, Frederic Vasseur, enthused at the prospect of Sirotkin developing with the team.

“Sergey is one of the most promising drivers from the junior categories so it is great for us that he is joining Renault Sport.”

Vasseur continued to discuss the driver’s achievements in the GP2 series and how it influenced Renault’s decision.

“We saw that he was the most promising rookie in the GP2 series last season where he achieved a race win and multiple podiums.

“In 2016 he is very well placed to fight for the title.”

There are no concerns amongst the team given the young driver’s experience on his home track, Vasseur adding;

“He has previously driven at the Sochi Autodrom in a GP2 car so we have confidence in the job he can do for us this weekend.”
