FORMER EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT BURIED AFTER DYING IN COURT

The former Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi, has been buried after he fainted and died in court on the 17th of June, 2019.

BBC reports that his lawyer told the AFP news agency that the former president has been buried in eastern Cairo. His family and activist had repeatedly raised concerns about his health and the amount of time he was kept in custody. He was 67.

BACKGROUND

Mohammed Morsi was overthrown from office a year after he was sworn into office. The former president, who was also a top figure of the Islamist movement Muslim Brotherhood, was known to have connived with the Palestinian Islamist group called Hamas.

The former president was charged for espionage as a result, the army ousted him in 2013. He has remained in custody since then.

Mohammed Morsi was in court for a hearing on charges of espionage but died in the process.
