FIFA PRESIDENT INITIATES NEW RACISM MEASURES IN FOOTBALL

FIFA PRESIDENT CONCERNED ABOUT RACISM IN FOOTBALL

FIFA President Gianni Infantino says protocols are in place so that referees can abandon the World Cup if there are incidents of racism.

He said, “I wouldn’t say that we are concerned about discrimination, human rights and security but we take them very seriously, we have taken appropriate measures in the process”. He continued by saying referees will have the power to abandon matches at the world cup if there are incidents of racism on the field of play.

The World Cup starting in Russia on June 14, 2018, could be dogged by discrimination after historic problems of racism in the World Cup.

Over the years, there have been issues of racism in the world’s football. American Sports journalist Grant Wahl said, “It’s shocking how much racism exist. Public racism– especially in European soccer”

According to him, “we’ve seen racist chants and we’ve seen players walk of the field in response to those racist chants”.

Wahl pointed to past incident that included Nazi banners in the stands and bananas thrown at the black players on the field, American Jozy Altidore was the target of insults in Holland.

Former black stars player Sulley Muntari also had similar experience of racism in the Italian serie A. The player was sent off after confronting racist in the serie A match between Pescara and Cagliari.

Infantino says, there are measures put in place should anything occur during matches. He has warned of “serious consequences” if there are such issues.
