The former president John Agyekum Kufuor has entreated the National Identification Authority (NIA) to accept the Voter ID as a proof of Ghanaian citizenship for the registration and insurance of the Ghana card.
According to the law that regulates the activities of the national identification authority (NIA), they presently accept only a passport and a birth certificate as evidence of Ghanaian citizenship for the insurance of the Ghana card.
Persons without either a passport or a birth certificate could also have two Ghanaian citizens to bear witness for their citizenship.
The minority in parliament has persistently pressured the NIA to accept the voters ID card as one of the requirements for the registration and insurance of the Ghana card but the national identification authority (NIA) declined which as a result led to the minority boycotting the registration for parliamentarians.
Former president Kufuor on Tuesday, 26th June 2018 stated that it is necessary for the NIA to consider the voters ID card as a form of qualification.
“it should be added, if voters ID card is not incorporated in this, then when it comes to citizens going to make a government where would you be?” he asked.
“How would you say truly you also have power in your thumb to make and unmake a government? So voters ID should be part of it,” he added.
