COMMERCIAL DRIVERS ABUSING THE RIGHT TO SPACE –PERDESTRAINS LAMENT

Commercial drivers at Kasoa old market are abusing the space provided for them as their new station to park their cars.

The new space provided is to serve as a temporary station to offload, load and park their cars until it is their time to move the passengers from the station to their destination.

The main station for the commercial drivers to operate all these activities is currently under construction.

The construction which began somewhere last year is still in progress which has rendered the drivers, have their vehicles park along the road causing problems for the pedestrians to also have their way on the road.

In an interview with some of the drivers, they said they don’t see anything wrong with them using portion of the road as their new station because their main station is under construction and they have no place to park their cars.

They explained that, they cannot stop their work because they don’t have a station since that is their only source of income which feeds them and their families.

They added that, they also pay tax which enable the government generate revenue to flourish developmental project in the country and that, they can also use government’s properties.

Speaking to one of the Station Masters, Mr. Paul Donkor popularly known as Master Paul said “We are permitted to operate on the road for now since they are working on our main station”

When asked whether or not if the policemen around do harassed them he answered that, “they are taskforce rather, and they arrest those drivers who are not with us at the station and when they are fined for stopping to pick passengers, the money is taken to our GPRTU leaders. And that the taskforce are here to protect us”.

But the pedestrians at Kasoa are not comfortable with how the drivers are abusing the space provided for them as their new station by the Kasoa GPRTU.

They also expressed how inconvenience that is causing them.

One pedestrian, name withheld said, “see the way they have park the cars, sometimes when you are passing and you don’t take care, a car can easily knock you down because of the conjunction on the road and if something can be done about it they should do it for us, we are suffering here”.

They are pleading with the authorities to do something for them.
