“Ghanaians may love Americans but not to the extent of living with foreign troops on such a scale. Ghanaians have enough foreigners dominating their economic and social life.” – Jerry John Rawling, the former president, stated in the discussion about this upcoming issue. He is speaking out a lot of people´s minds. The current situation is treating Ghana unfair. The country isn´t getting something out of this collaboration, in contrary foreign forces are going to have power over them, even though it is assumed as working together.
The U.S is continuing using Ghanaian resources in exchange for military training and equipment, mentioned above. This kind of payment is only helping the forces and not the general population, which is worrying them. According to the Western state owning enough money to do actual payment, it makes Ghanaians want their government to disagree to the expansion of Status of Forces Agreement.
Agreeing with Rawlings statement, there are a lot of businesses in Ghana running by international companies, which can be described as domination. Nevertheless, the so-called “dominating their […] social life” is what comes along globalization, which shouldn´t be claimed to be negative. It´s important to consider the good achievements and positive influences foreigners have on Ghanaian society as well. The world is trying to grow together as one.
More military means more war
Regarding the fact, that the world is rearming, more and more money is spent on military, weapons and recruiting soldiers, Ghana should be one of the first working against that while disagreeing to U.S suggestions.
The world´s fear of war is not going to be successfully combated with greater armies. Military doesn´t mean peace, it means conflict. They tried in the past, now it´s time to establish long-term improvements, methods to change the unequal distribution of wealth between the nations. This particular issue is causing envy and hate, which only leads to violence and war. Actual reasons for that should be faced by the Western nations.
Enlarging armies, invent better war machinery are just simplified, purblind moves trying to create a feeling of security and protection for the citizen. This feeling won´t last long if the persons in power keep ignoring the actual reason for conflicts.
It´s time for peace!
