Akuffo Addo Cannot Fight Corruption- Alban Bagbin

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has described Nana Akuffo Addo as ineligible to fight corruption in the country. This, he said in an interview with Pinknews during a forum to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the NDC at the party’s national headquarters, Accra. Alban Bagbin, who has worked closely with the President during their heydays at Ghana’s parliament attributed this assertion to the fact that our political system has now become money-driven making politics a “no go area” for those not financially sound.

“Politics has become too expensive in Ghana, you can’t do politics if you are poor,” he lamented worryingly. He thus suggested that the state should get actively involved in the activities of political parties by finding out where and how they get their funds and sponsorship so that regardless of what party comes to power, the fight against corruption would still continue.

Speaking on President Akuffo Addo’s capability of fighting the national canker, he emphatically stated that the president would not be able to fight corruption in the country.  “And I tell you, Akuffo Addo is my friend. I know him and the truth is that he can’t fight corruption in his government. He was supported by people during his campaigns, so all those financiers are now going to look up to how they can chop. After all they didn’t finance for free, no and so it will be difficult to fight those who helped him.” He said.

Mr. Bagbin also called for a thorough check of manifestoes of political parties during elections, so that politicians do not just make promises that will be difficult to fulfill when they come to power. He however attributed the NDC’s loss in last year’s elections to the fact that, the NPP made extravagant promises whilst the NDC campaigned on real facts and issues.
