Andre Ayew has joined the debate over who is Africa’s greatest on the ball with the Swansea City playmaker insisting Ghana legend Abedi Pele is more skillful than Nigerian superstar Jay Jay Okocha.
Even though Ayew believes that his father has a better mastery of the ball than the former Bolton Wanderers playmaker, the Ghana deputy captain says Okocha deserves to have won the African Footballers of the Year award in his playing time.
The debate over who is the better player between Abedi Pele and Okocha has raged in Africa for years as the debate splits opinions.
Ayew, whose father is the three-time African Footballer of the Year winner, has also joined the debate to back the man nicknamed ‘The Maestro’.
According to the Swansea City player even though both retired players had different styles of play, the former Ghana captain is more adept with the ball.
The Swansea forward says his dad showed more finesse and tactics during his playing days.
“I will say Abedi Pele is the most skillful. He had a lot of skills even though their style of play was different. He showed a lot of technique and a lot of finesse in his game,” Andre Ayew told Starr FM.
“And also I saw all his games, I also saw Jay Jay Okocha; he was my generation. It’s sad that he never won the African best player; football is like that,” he said.
Despite showing a lot of talent during his playing time Okocha was never considered for the African Player of the Year award by CAF. However he won the BBC version following his showing for Bolton.
Abedi Pele won the African Player of the Year award three times and also clinched the first edition of the BBC version.
