450-SEATER NEW PARLIAMENTARY BUILDING, A MISPLACED PRIORITY OR NOT?

Recently, it was announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt.Hon. Mike Quarye that the government of Ghana wants to build a new 450-seater new parliamentary building in Ghana. The building is estimated to cost 200 million Dollars with government partially funding it and the remainder from donor nations.

This sudden announcement has been met with so much criticisms from Ghanaians. Ghanaians has expressed their utmost displeasure with this. They argued that a new chamber has no benefits whatsoever to the ordinary Ghanaian.

Ghanaians have taken to radio, Facebook, WhatsApp and other media outlets to talk about their dissatisfaction.. They have argued that there are more pressing issues to be taken care of by the government.

Some argued that rural areas of the country still lack good drinking water, children schooling under trees, poor road networks, among others are more pressing and needs attention from the government.

However, not all MPs are in agreement with the construction of a new chamber although a majority of them are in support of it.

Will government succumb to public pressure to drop this initiative that has garnered massive criticisms, displeasure and public outcry?

We live to see!
